when i try to connect to modem wirelessly, everytime i go into settings and prompt connect it fails. why?

I'm afraid that there is nowhere near enough information to answer the question.

Assuming Windows (that's one of the things that you left out) you should try this: Start, Connect To, Wireless Connection. Now post a NEW question saying EXACTLY what happens

BTW Modems don't have Wireless. I suspect that you actually have a domestic router.
