intermitant gear selection?

i recently changed the gear box on a 51 plate skoda octavia, it was initially hard to get in and out of gear but when driving gets easy
and when you go straight for reverse it grinds but after driving it goes in.
then when it sits it starts again its difficult again.
a freind said i've set up the selection wrong but its more like the clutch to me.

Anyone Help?

It was a recon box, and i put halfords gearbox oil in, it took 2 ltr's.

have you put a fresh box in and was it full of oil already, like you say why should clutch now be faulty? i think its a fault with fresh box and could well be oil problem!

possibly, i'l look in to it. just seemed strange like the clutch isnt doing its job sometimes, then suddenly is.
was thinking slave cylinder by why would it go just as i change the gearbox.

could be wrong oil in gearbox-does it get better when its hot ? when 5 speed box came out in rover sd1, they changed grade of g/box oil from 75 sae to auto transmission fluid because gears [in particular 2nd] were hard to get when cold-this cured it! worth a try.
