daf lf 45 wont start?

I have just bought a 51 plate daf lf 45 150 and it drove perfect , parked it up and it wouldnt start so replaced the fuel filter on the tank as it looked bad , bled it up and it started fine , another week later came to start it and it wont start ? both filters are full of fuel , but the primer pump dosnt seem to build up any resistance when you try priming it , swapped the primer pump and no diferen? any ideas ??

hi mate, hope this helps you, fit inline fuel return valve make sure you get the correct size to fit the fuel line,, it apears the fuel is running back,,,thanks good luck

its a 53 plate with common rail, we tillted the cab over to fit new air filter box , upon retilting the cab & put key in to start , it would fire up then die !!! have been using the spare key , not the usual one , does that have anything to the brain if its usual key not used ???

I have a question for Norb

I have similar issues with a Daf 45, it was always bad to start but having been sat through the winter it wouldn't go at all. I've replaced the lift pump and the fuel line from the lift pump to the tank filter. I will now start with some easy start but will die if you let the revs drop, also seems to have very little power.

Any Thoughts

N reg Turbo45 was sticky to drive back to house. Got mechanic to change fuel filter but still wont start. Been told by this mechanic that it is a fuel pump problem.

Just spoke to another mechanic who thinks this cant be true, and that it is a starter problem.

Have battery power as can switch on CD and lights just not turn engine over.

What is the problem

thanks for letting me know ..i feel like giving up trying to help when people don't let you know the outcome ...so thanks for that ...on the plus side you have stopped a future issue with cleaning out the pre-filter

glad to be of help

You are a star mate , i owe you a pint , imobiliser issue :) top man she runs again

Jamie, August 2011
ok just a quick one before we go futher,is the chip for the immobiliser rattling about in the key ???if you look at the key you can see where you can prise it open to seperate the 2 halves, you should see a glass vial in a slot,if it's in the slot it's ok ....but be careful when opening the key you don't drop it ...

if that is ok ,undo the metal fuel pipe where it screws on to the common rail and get someone to spin the engine over ,if no fuel then the mechanical lift pump bolted to the main pump has sheared it's drive ,unfortunately non repairable complete my main pump required ..if you get fuel to the common rail .get back to me
cheers

Thanks mate ,have blown all the lines back ,Im gettin good fuel supply to the pump if i pump the primer pump on the filter , have tried with the electrical conector off the fuel pump but she still only tries to start , but wont , i have undone the fuel line at the rail to see if fuel is comming up , so will it get full fuel pressure back if i crank it over ?
Cheers

thanks for replying and for that i am grateful ,is nice to get a response ....
what you need to do now is ,blow out the fuel pipe back to the tank ,just in case crap is in them ..to take any blockages out the eqation ie the tank as the pick up is at the bottom and it has been known for debri in the tank to block it ,after all the filter head was blocked ...get a can of fuel as a substitute fuel tank and see if the vehicle starts ...as a cheat you can disconnect the electrical plug at the main fuel pump ,that should give max pressure at the fuel rail and you should start ,there will be a red engine warning because you have disconnected the plug, but that will extinguish as soon as you plug it back in ..note don't undo injectors to bleed it up as that looses the rail pressure ,you can also check the tightness of the gland nut that secures the injector to the cylinder head ,should be 50nm ...if that don't work get back and i'll give more info

Thanks , yea it was full of crap ,cleaned it out and now it pumps up and pressurises up but still wont start ?? Trys but just wont start , i suspect it may be the pump but dont wana buy one unless im sure

Jamie, August 2011
remove large brass nut on filter housing where pipe push in and clean crap that collects, you may have to strip the complete housing ,not difficult
