Are you trying to run Windows XP? When it tries to load, it goes through a series of things which load before you can log on or get to the desktop.
1. MBR reads boot sector - starts Ntldr
2. Read boot.ini, puts up boot menu
3. Ntdetect, boot.ini, bootsect.dos and Ntbootdd.sys must be in root folder.
4. Ntldr loads Ntoskrnl and Hal.dll - must be windows\system32 folder
5. Ntldr reads the registry, selects hardware profile and load device drivers
6. Ntoskrnl.exe takes over which starts winlogon.exe - should be in system32 folder, this starts Lssass.exe which displays welcome screen which allows user to log on system.
If any of these files is missing or corrupted, this may explain why you have the blank screen, so it might be a case of reinstalling your operating system
