Any ideas?

My Citroen Xsara Picasso 2ltr TD is bellowing black smoke when I accelerate, it still smokes a little on tickover but not as bad, I have been told it is likely to be the turbo knackered, has anyone got any ideas.

would not go ahead and just replace the turbo on someones say so until you are sure that is what is wrong or it could cost you a fortune,is the egr valve functioning ok?need cleaning?have you tried a fuel conditioner,replaced the filters?these are cheap alternatives compared to a turbo.
