check poor fitting connection of battery being loose because of different larger size of clamps to battery terminals

Could be, but unlikely. Sounds more like an auxiliary belt or the alternator itself. I'd check the belt first, if that's gone just fit a new one. Worth checking the leads and connections to the alternator if the belt is ok.

If the battery is more than 6 or 7 years old then it is getting on a bit, but if the car is a high miler the alternator brushes could be worn out.
