timing ?

i have replaced the timing belt as other one got split wen droped bolt in to pully . i have found timing marks on top pully . and have done timing i think the old way on bottom pully by brining piston to top but not sure which is no 1car is running and starts first time running uneven like timing is out ....but starts fisrt time and stays running revs go up and down a bit

It would help if you told us what car/engine it is as most modern engines are "interference", ie if the belt breaks when the engine is running the valves will hit the piston crowns.
Have you done a compression test?
