Leyland DAF 45 130 (pre LF) running slow?

I have a R reg Leyland DAF 45 130 Euro 2 pre LF horse box, I am having problems with loss of power, The engine in all gears sticks at about 15000revs (the bottom of the green bit on the rev counter), I have changed the fuel filter, checked the air filter and drained the sediment trap on the fuel tank and this at first appeared to do the trick, a few days later and the problem has returned, although i did manage to get above 15000 revs when i started the engine but the revs dropped off, a friend has suggested changing the fule lift pump. the enginre runs fine and the truck drives alright, no smoke from the exhaust, no misfires or anything. its a bit embarrassing going everywhere at 20-30mph!

My cable snapped 10 miles from home and i made it back on a fast tickover. As you say Norb it's a good truck. MOT due next month on mine.

glad to be of help..strange thing is when you strip it both the cable and pedal will be free ,but fitting of new parts solves the prob ..have done hundreds of them before the LF came out ..apart from the handbrake cables at every MOT the old 45 is an excellent truck ,probably the best there is ..no computers and east to fix ...if the wipers ever fail ,relay is behind passenger side dash ...if you ever lose all electrics check main plug behind the centre panel under grill ...good idea to remove panel and check plug for corrosion and protect as appropriate

Norb, Had a closer look at the accelerator cable, no RSL, I found that the cable bracket at the engine end was lose and there was a lot of play in the cable, I've tighten up the bracket and adjusted the cable so there isn't as much play in it, (I've ordered a new pedal and cable), this has cured the problem for now until I fit the new one. many thanks.

I havn't been able to get a close look at the problem today, but I did get a chance, before it got dark! to reach under the cab and pull the engine end of the throttle cable. this gave me full revs, I tried the pedal again and I got more revs than I have been able too since the problem, but not as much as when I pulled the engine end of the cable. from this I would guess that the problem is with the pedal and cable. I will have a closer look at the weekend. thanks again.

thanks ..it;s good to know the outcome,,,can't help you with 1 of the cable securing clips ,you'll find it when you remove the cable ,it;s a pig...if you have the RSL it may be the RSL motor at fault ,or seized linkage

Norb, thanks for all the info, we (a mate and me) are going to check the cable and pedal tomorrow evening (or Friday evening if he can't make it) I will let you know what we discover. we have a major DAf parts place nearby, which is handy! thanks again.

even though when disconnected from each other the pedal will feel free as will the cable ,it's best and less hassle to just replace both ...if you have an RSL it will be a 2 piece cable and a nightmare linkage set up ...an impact driver is best for freeing of the screws in the pedal ,the nut is captive ,though the weld may break ,but you can get fit nuts

Thanks for that norb, not sure if it has a speed limiter, will check cable and pedal tomorrow and let you know, thanks for the help.

hi check that you are getting full revs ,ie press pedal and see that the injection pump is going to max travel.the pedal and cable are common faults ,,,also does it have a road speed limiter fitted ?if so that may be at fault ..
