Could be one of many of things and getting the fault codes read should tell you.
At a guess it is likely to be the Lambda sensor in the exhaust system. However it could be something as simple as a clogged air filter that needs renewing.
Are you in the AA or RAC, they may be able to diagnose the fault accurately.
