What does the malfunction indicator light mean when on?

The malfunction indicator light is on my Suzuki alto 2005 car what could this be indicating

Could be one of many of things and getting the fault codes read should tell you.

At a guess it is likely to be the Lambda sensor in the exhaust system. However it could be something as simple as a clogged air filter that needs renewing.

Are you in the AA or RAC, they may be able to diagnose the fault accurately.
