Maytag washer won't spin, LAT8426AAE?

maytag washer "Dependable Care" 14 yrs old. will not spin. I have read many, many articles on the net, "troubleshooting techniques". Agitation works. Inspected motor belt, good. Tension seems good. Motor in far back position on carrage, (springs pull motor back), & allow motor to move forward towards center tranny pully. Removed inner tub, inspected for mech. bind between inner & outer, good. With belts removed, tranny pully rotates by hand easily & spindle moves up/dwn. Other direction moves about 360degrees and then won't move further. Thinking sleeve bearings or tranny (spring brakes?). Removed outer tub. Seal assy, spindle sleeve. Both sleeve & upper seal w/outer sleeve don't act like bearing, tight. Needs replaced. However, the tranny only moves in one direction. I'm thinking spin is one direction & agitate the other. (?). Laid washer on side, rotated tranny w/cover up,removed 4 screws. It's filled w/oil,doesn't seem bound. Brake problem? Removed center pully, chked cogs alighned, & ball bearing spins nicely. HELP, oh experienced ones. BTW, you guys don't get paid enough. TY Jim

Lincoln Appliance,

Firstly, Thanks for the quick response, appreciate. I told my spouse, the whole tranny might spin in spin cycle. Could not find that comment in the hrs of research. Thought the brake assy had some sort of centrifucal clutch. Thanks for clearing that up also.

Not familiar with the LAT models but I think they work on the same principle as the MAT model. You are correct in saying one way is agitate & reverse direction is spin. With machine lying down turning pulley anti clockwise will drive the centre shaft only which will drive the gears inside the gearbox and cause agitator to agitate. Turn it clock wise and pulley should travel up the shaft until it presses on the brake package & releases the brake, then the complete gearbox housing will rotate & the bowl will spin. If the brake is not releasing, then either the thrust bearing on top of the pulley is worn or the brake package is faulty. Do not try to open the brake package as it has a 200lb spring inside. Earlier packages could be opened with the aid of a special brake package tool. Later ones where sealed and crimped and not meant to be opened for repair. Hope this helps.
