smeg oven, replaced element but?

hi, i replaced the element in my smeg oven. its a free standing oven. i was happy to replace the element in my oven and ensured i put the wires back where they had to go. but when i switched the power back on the oven blew at the back. i opened up the back and could see one of the conections had a power serge and blew a contact point. so the wire turned black and the contact destroyed. is this something that can be jusst replaced by myself or is someting else causing this to happen?? note: i had to replace the element as it blew and broke whislt in use.
