hotpoint aquarius vtd00 motor problem?

i have a vtd00 aquarius drier that does not turn but heating element gets hot. ive diconnected the heater and checked all the wiring which is all intact. with the capacitor unplugged the motor works normally(after a slight nudge by hand). with the capacitor reconnected the motor will not turn but makes a noise almost as if it is trying to go in forward and reverse at the same time. is this likely to be just a capacitor fault or are there other forces at work? in addition to this- is there no overheat cut out to stop the heating element in the event of this kind of failure? i would appreciate any help on this subject. many thanks
