if it does not pick up dirt when in the vertcal position (i.e from the floor beaters) then it may be a problem with the short tensioning hose underneath (see http://mr-ives.blogspot.com/2007/10/dyson-vacuum-cleaners.html)

go to the dyson website. they have excellent diagnostic pages. i fixed mine using the instructions.

Check the number again on your machine as I don't believe there is such a model as a DC09.
