How can i get my 02 vauxhall corsa to start?

The car will fire up for a couple of seconds and then dies out. The only lights that are working on the dashboard when you turn on the ignition is the air bag and the engine management lights. Can anyone please help or will i have to take it direct to main dealer? Thanks
