ignition problem?

Hi we have a 2006 LDV PIlot van. Some times it starts ok but other times it can take up to 20 mins. Anyone got any suggestions?

heater plugs, air in fuel system ? if its a diesel. more info needed. i.e. is it turning over,is it turning fast enough,is there lots of smoke from exhaust when turning over, etc.....
