My mum's WD440 shows no lights?

My 80 year old mum has a Hotpoint WD440. Yesterday when I visited, she said it started a cycle then stopped. No lights are visible, the on/off switch has no effect. I checked the mains connection; the m/c is plugged into a double socket, the other is used by a dishwasher which is running ok. I checked the consumer unit trips, they were ok. I did switch off then on the consumer unit and when I returned to the m/c it seemed that the pump was running. However, still no effect from the on/off switch.
