1987 nissan cherry auto?

hi ya,just bought the wife this little runaround and iam having a problem with the car stalling.the vendor assured me that the car just needed a good service.I have replaced the plugs, all leads, dizzy cap,all filters and fluids.the car starts perfectly cold/hot,and idles ok untill I select drive, the revs drop and if I don't set off the engine cuts out.a friend suggest I higher the idle.does any one know if there are any sensors anywhere.I have cleaned the carb and fitted inline fuel filter.iam at a loss now any ideas please.

OK so your idle should be 700 +/_50 and 2100 +/_200 as to the gearbox, just drain it and refill then with the engine running manually select each gear a couple of times then stop and check/adjust oil level then give it a test drive.

Not sure on the gearbox on your car but on some auto's there is an oil filter in the bottom of the box that need to be replaced at regular intervals as well, normall this will involve dropping the sump pan off the g/box

thanks, I forgot to mention the engine is a 1.3 I have had a suspicion that the box/oil was at fault, draining the box doesn't bother me but iam a bit worried about the procedure of the refill.do I just simply refill and select drive and that's it.iam not a auto man but wife only has the auto licence so I really haven't had anything to do with autos.

Just had another thought !! you could try draining the oil from the gearbox and replacing it with fresh Dexron ll ATF you'll need 6 litres, the old oil will of become degraged over time and could be causing extra drag in the gearbox hence the engine is struggling at idle ??

Your car has a good old fashioned engine with a carburetor so there are no fancy electronics, the idle speed is adjustable by a screw near where the throttle cable attaches to the carb, for an auto the normal idle speed (warm engine) should be 800 +/_50 rpm for the 1.5L and 700 +/_50 rpm for the 1.0L and the fast idle speeds of 2200 +/_ 200 rpm for the 1.5L and 1800 +/_100 rpm for the 1.0L
