mk4 golf, oil light comes on when car is warmed up?

i`ve recently topped my engine oil up and checked to see if it is at the maximum mark on the dip stick, which it is, however the oil light has been coming on when the car is fully warmed up,any info on that would be appreciated thanks

Oil pumps pump volume not create pressure morons.

hi chicksfan,i changed the oil and replaced the filter with a new one, took the car out for a good spin, the oil light has kept off, hopefully this has done the job, thanks mate

yes i will do chicksfan,i wish i`d stuck to the 10w 40 semi synthetic, its best to stick to what you know is`nt it,especially on these modern engines, the engine has done 108 thousand mile, i suppose for a small engine thats fairly high ish,i`d just like to say thankyou very much for your time chicksfan,i`ll let you know how i get on mate thanks steve

Steve,

If it were me I would use a slightly thicker oil if the car has done quite a few miles. I would use a 10W40 semi-synthetic such as Halfords, selling for about £24 for 5 litres. That, and a new quality oil filter, should do the job.

However, should the problem persist after that then I'd seriously consider that the oil pump may be suspect.

Best of luck. Keep us updated.

thanks chicksfan again and thanks k,yes i will give the car an oil and filter change and see where i go from there, when the car got serviced i`m sure they used a 40 10w or 15w semi synthetic oil,a friend said my new oil the 5w 30 semi synthetic would be ok,thats what i was recommended and yes chicksfan the oil light was coming on before i topped it up,so i added some more oil to get the light off thankyou`s

could be number of causes, needs oil pressure checking with an independant gauge to get more accurate reading.

Just a thought - was the oil light coming on BEFORE you topped it up? Or has it only started happening since you topped it up?

ChicksFan, December 2011
It sounds as if you have low oil pressure. When the oil is cold (and hence thicker) the oil pressure is ok. When the oil gets hotter and thins out the oil pressure falls.

Probably the oil pump is worn, or the pick up pipe in the sump may need cleaning. I'd suspect the oil pump.

Another possibility is that the oil pressure sensor may need replacing. However, from what you say, it seems to be working properly.

It needs checking out properly before serious damage is done to your engine. However I'd start by doing an oil and filter change now. Fresh oil may cure it.

thanks chicksfan,my car is a 1.4 2001 model, the car was serviced last april,i`ve topped the engine oil up with 5w 30 semi synthetic, oil light comes on after about 20 mins of driving

Overdue for oil change?
Blocked/collapsed oil filter?
Oil pump failing?

When did you last renew the oil and filter? Could it be overdue for renewal?

Don't overfill the oil - especially on a diesel.
