depending on the make/model...an acrid smell can be associated with a burnt out motor or motor control pcb.plug the appliance back in and listen for the motor/compressor.if it runs its ok,if it still gives off that aroma,unplug turn fridge around and wash out the evap tray ontop of the compressor if fitted.if it hasn't got the evap tray wash the tray/bottom plate the motor is fixed to.the heat from the compressor evaporates the water that drains from the fridge compartment,this water can become rather smelly.
