whats wrong with my auto box?

vw sharan 1.9 tdi 54 reg drives ok but gear stick will not come out of drive its stuck, it jamed up without any warning

to check if its in the box, disconnect inner cable from selector on box and work lever. The chances are kids in the car have used the console as a money box and jammed the lever.
