This machine works OK except for a high pitched screech at times. Not constant but can go on for long periods.

Is it possible for a lay person to fix with basic DIY skills?

if you consider yourself confident enough remove the top and the whole front panel off the machine, while doing so be careful not to break the small pcb you will find the tensioner wheels around the belt either in need of light oiling or renewing also give the bigger roller wheels a drop of oil
