How can I fix my Maytag gas dryer, model #MDG6657BWW?

Maytag gas dryer model #MDG6657BWW is drying clothes but when using the auto dry setting the knob does not advance and the dryer will run forever. When using the timer setting, it works properly. Filter and vent have been cleaned and free of any obstructions.
