Dodgy light? Ford Fiesta?

I was going round a roundabout today and my 1991 Ford Fiesta XR2i battery light flashed on and off again! I then started to get a funny smell but thought not much of it!
After turning my ignition off and disconnecting the key the light has come back on and is permanently on.
I'm guessing there is a short, but i dont know how to fix it at all!
Help

First place to look is the fuse box to check for wires that may be shorting.

Next, trace the wires to and from the ignition barrel and the alternator (The battery light is operated through the alternator). Theres a very good chance that something has shorted out and has caused the wires to heat up and started to melt the plastic sleeving (This is the smell you noticed).

Good luck.

you have a problem with your electrics. to fix it must be done in the garage, you might night a new wiring loom,ect....
or it could be the ecu. if it has one
