corsa deisel wont turn over just cliks or grinds any ideas?????????

when i try to turn over my vauxhall corsa deisel it either gives out a small scraping or grinding noise or it just clicks i think it is the starter motor but would like any advise before i go out and buy a new one any help would be appreseated

Had same problem.I cleaned all connections to starter motor and alternator with emery paper.BROOM BROOM ...sorted
