i have a 10 yr. old craftsman riding mower. 15 horse kohler engine?

it runs perfect. except when i put it in gear, it makes a rattling, gear slipping noise. like the gears are not quite connecting properly. when on level or downhill, it's not quite as bad. but going on any incline or uphill, it very loud.
can i fix this myself??

thanx, larry the model 917252600

I tore my down and with a little patience and common sense I fixed it ..........good luck
