Alternative for a full size model is a dry joint in the control module behind the front panel in the door.

An easy fix if your good with a solder iron or take the module out & send it away for a fix / replacement.

If you have a compact dishwasher, and it is stuck on the first cycle as well, it is possible that the micro switch on the right hand side of the dishwasher has become flooded. Take the cover off, and check for dampness around the electronics. Sometimes you can let the micro switch dry and it will work again, other times you have to buy a replacement. You may need to use some sealant on some of the pipe-work to stop water leaking out of the various chambers.
