peugeot/citroen diesel engin timing belt tension?

hav got a berlingo wit the dw8 engin fitted havin come from a long line of pugs with xud lumps in them belt setup has always been easy . but the haynes book of errors states use of a gismo that electronicaly senses belt tightness , all indipendent garages hav not heard of it /dont use it only dealers use it / myself cant seem to get one, so my question is how important is this ULTRA ACURATE method of setin up belt tension or can i as lernd at night school as used on cortinas of long ago twist at longest run a third and hope for the best . also cud it be a good idea not to let the belt do the recomendid 80000 miles and cut it down to 50000 to be safe on a less acurate method . cheers lee

just done one of these and as you say there is a meter to adjust the tension, slackened off the three bolts on the camshaft, fitted belt and adjusted till I had the adjuster roughly where it was before, felt the belt and wasn`t too tight, wasn`t too slack, gave the engine a couple of turns, refitted the pins and rechecked the tension,it didn`t whine when started up so was quite happy with that and am confident that it will be ok,it`s up to yourself if you want to source a tool but if you take your time and double check everything then you should get on ok.

same as all the other timiing belts without auto tensioner wants all the slack out but once that goes just a littlle more. the belts do not have along enough side to twist them but if you can pull it back when you have tighened it on the shortest side just tighten a fraction more is a good guide.they normally do the milage if you have a problem its usually a bearing or water pump gone that causes the break or drive belt fraying and going into cambelt
