can the gasket on the diesel pump on a peugeot 106 XND be changed while it is still on the side of the engine

no,if you have an oil leak then a smear of silicon sealant may work for a while but could imagine there are confined areas round about the pump which may restrict access and it would have to be well cleaned before this,it may be slack fixing bolts/nuts causing your problem but to do the gasket correctly will entail the removal of the pump.
