Salt - WHY????

Why do you need to put salt in a dishwasher? Thought that if you were using the all in one tabs you did not need to use salt or rinse aid?

salt mainly used in area where hard water is a problem wont make a difference if you put some extra salt but not needed if 3 in 1 tablet is used
