coolant light comes on and temp is rising. is coolant just water or not?

collant should be 50/50 mix of a/freeze and water,your problem could be a number of things but firstly check there is coolant in the system then it is a matter of checking thermostats,water pumps,leaks,blocked radiators,head gaskets,etc,etc,etc
