How can I fix a stiff clutch peddle on a Nissan Micra '52 old shape?

Have a '52 old shape Nissan Micra Tempest.
The clutch peddle has always seemed heavy to press
down but since I had a replacement clutch and especially a new clutch cable its got worse - actually now is a groaning noise when you depress. Is there anything that can be done to ease / lubricate the movement.
