Thermostat houseing?

My thermostat houseing reasonly broke on my Ford Focus 2.0 litre petrol 02 plate. I replaced it and the thermostat with a new one but it is still leaking. Should I have put gasket seal on the joint where it fits to the engine? There wasn't any on the one that I renewed. It did have a rubber ring seal which was also on the new one when I fitted it. It might not be leaking from where it fits to the engine. Try repaceing the old clips on the rubber hoses with jubilee clips.

Thank you cdc for your answering my question. I think the surfaces where clean but I will make sure they are when I do the job again and I will add a small smear of silcon sealant. Thanks again, Andrew.

the rubber ring is the gasket,was the mating surface nice and clean?a small smear of silicon sealant wouldn`t do any harm either
