Zanussi Nexus FL1082 machine performs on certain washes. ?

Zanussi machine performs on certain washes only -on others (generally on cool settings) it stops part way through or refuses to start, when it hums but water does not flow - what is likely to be the problem?

No problem with those things - I have a feeling the rachet is worn as I can get it to progress if I give the selction knob a tiny twitch onwards.
