yes you are correct,
PE error is indeed a problem with the sensor or a loose connector/connection,
its a easy procedure that you can diy,it only involves removing the top from the machine and you are in there.
isolate the power(pull the mains plug),
remove the two torx headed screws from the rear of the machine holding the top onto the machine,
once you have removed the top,you need to locate the pressure vessel.
The vessel or water sensor is located towards the rear right side of the machine.
look for a cylinder shaped object about 3 inches long with a small pipe attached to one end and several wires connected to the other end.
now before you rush out and purchase a new sensor,pull the pipe off the cylinder and blow down it,it maybe blocked.
if the tube is blocked it cannot operate the diaphragm inside the vessel/water sensor,
also check the wiring connector on the other end for security,
push the small pipe back on,
replace the top as a safety precaution and run the machine,if it aborts with the error code then you will need to replace the cylinder/pressure switch.
