how to change the battery on a 2006 clio?

i am about to change the battery on a 2006 renault clio. There is a connection coming out of the top side of the battery. Anyone know what this is for?

if its a small pipe with hole in it its to connect pipe to for beather .its not always got a pipe but still needs to let gas out and is ok as it is
