Should water remain in machine after wash?

I was getting a smell from my washing machine ( bosch classi xx 1200 express ) I have run some 90 deg. washes and the smell has gone. When I open small catch on the bottom right of the font of the machine and unscrew the drainer plug which lets you see if anything is blocked or stuck, water always comes out, about 1/3 of a cup. Is this normal ?

There will always be some water, the pump at the bottom, outlet at the top, when the pump stops a pipeful goes back down into m/c. Smell is normal after time, build up of soap etc, good high temp wash is usualy way, to get rid of it.
