I have a problem with rear calipers on Merc 816 vario, fitted new calipers both sides, put pins in through handbrake arm and chamber, bled brakes and now hand brake won't catch at all. Pumped footbrake and handbrake to self adjust with no joy. Removed pins on handbrake arm and both arms have no resistance in either. Both Alan keys in piston are out where they should be aswell. Can anyone advise?
Cheers Ricky

i mean the handbrake lever on the caliper. sometimes people are tempted to move the lever to get the clevice pin located, rather than adjusting the brake chamber arm to suit.

Hi guys, just about to embark on this myself. Can you clarify what you mean when you say dont bring the lever towards the arm?

Thanks

right. the alan bolt inside the piston has to be pushed to locate, and back off the piston.
these caliper are a pain in the ass when not set up, and will burn your brakes out!
there is a hole in the handbrake lever. put a 4mm drill into this, and find the locking hole(will be full of hard grit) clean this out, and lock the levers.
refit the calipers. adjust the air chamber link rods, so the clevice pin drops in. only then unlock the levers. if you are tempter to bring the lever toward the arm, the hand brake will drag, causing pads to burn. i cant stress how important this is.
refit new pads, and they will self adjust.
these are the brakes ford used to use, but actually scrapped the system because of brakes burning!

good luck

is all piston turning or just middle,if all turning it will need freeing off as it will be seized, if just middle turning you need to make sure de-adjuster has engaged by levering piston back whilst turning allen tool at the same time.callipers should set themselves after a few pumps on brake pedal.
