Megane II: Check Gearbox (motor racing - not changing up)?

Twice in as many weeks my Megane II has had a "Check Gearbox" message come up. When this happens it seems to be stuck in about 3rd gear and the motor races. The problem then goes away. Is there a simple fix? Ideas and comments would be greatly appreciated.
