How can I make y Dyson DC03 work on carpets?

I have used my Dyson DC03 for the past 4 years effectively. However, for the past 2 weeks it is not effective on carpets and makes a screeching noise when used on carpets with carpet setting. What do I need to do to fix this? Any suggestion is welcome.
