Kenmore powermate model 116 51513000 - broken belt?

I believe the belt in the powermate may be broken as it will not work at all, however, I do not have a manual to tell me how to take it apart to check it. Thanks

It looks as though the light cover is not a sepprate piece from the rest of the top. Once you just push on each side of the light cover it pops off. There are the screws...ect.

Go to Sears web site. Eventually it will lead you to a link similar to this one.

The canister vacuum cleaners are all similar in design. The manual for one may work well for the others.

If yours is like mine, then you first need to pry off the cover over the light on the top of the powermate unit. Under that cover are the philips screws you need to remove. Once they are removed, turn the unit over and use a flat screwdriver to loosen the clips on either side (they should be marked). When the bottom cover is unclipped on both sides you can pull it off, exposing the the brush and belt. The new belt I bought yesterday cost $5, and they seem to be common at vacuum stores (most likely because they break often!)

Replacing the belt is fairly easy. There are a couple of philips screws that you get at by turning the head upside down. Remove those screws. The rest of the head cover is held on by clips that are molded into the top half cover. Pry each of these gently with a screwdiver and the top cover should come off.

Did you have any luck? I, too, have misplaced my owners manual and am having no luck with finding out how to replace the belt myself. It seems the only way to fix this vacuum is to replace it with another brand, which seems to be a lot more affordable than taking a basically brand new machine to have it fixed by Sears.
