You probably need to replace the battery.

With the new battery, make sure that you only recharge when it's under 5% charge. (you want to reduce the number of charge/discharge cycles)

NEVER EVER let it totaly discharged for more than a few hours, maybe a day. (all Li-ion battery are destroyed if left totaly discharged for a few days)
When/if the battery get totaly discharged, you MUST recharge it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!! Right now if possible at all.
If the battery is under 3% charge, it's safer to turn the computer off and remove the battery.

It's NORMAL that resistors get hot. Resistors resist the passage of current. This generate heat. Unless it actualy emit smoke, you need to assume that it's operating within the expected thermal range.

It's NOT a good idea to poke around a working computer. You can accidently cause momentary shorts, and shorts can destroy components.
