how do i compress my combo van wing mirror spring?

Hi, my wing mirror has popped off on the drivers side of my combo van it only needs the spring compressing to pop it back in but have tried in vain so far to do this. Does anyone know of a way to do it?

the combo mirrors that i know of are a press fit onto the white round adjuster head in the mirror housing
