Catalytic Converters on Toyota Avensis?

I am not a mechanic.
I own a 2001 Toyota Avensis GLS VVT-1 1998 CC Saloon.
I have been told that the car has two catalytic converters.
Is this the case? If so, why are two required and how can you identify which one requires changing?
