there is an intermitent noise coming from the freezer compartment that stops when the door is opened . What could be causing this ?

ice impeding the fan motor. the fan stops when the door is open. a quick fix (and maybe permanent) would be to fully defrost by turning off and leaving the door open for a day or two.
if the fault persists after you've done this, then it will be engineer time i'm afraid.
