laptop starts, then cuts off?

Toshiba laptop starts and only gets as far as the Toshiba logo (with the f2 and f12 showing at the bottom) then it shuts off. Trying to figure out if it's the battery or power jack. It only does what I have described IF the power jack is plugged in to the laptop; otherwise, it does nothing. The battery indicator is red when I have the jack plugged in and everything shuts off when I don't.

It looks like there is a short in the battery pack or some equaly critical fault. A red battery indicator realy don't look normal, red usualy mean that there is a problem.

If that's the case, the computer may shut down to prevent some serious damage or even a fire. A bad battery CAN burst into flame, explode or leak.

Try removing the battery and start using ONLY the charger.

If it work, then you should discard the old battery and get a new one.

If it still shut down after some time, it's a sign of over heating.
Clean the air vents and heat sink of any dust.
Make sure that the fan is working properly. Replace it if needed.
