how do I connect my gas cooker?

I want to connect my new gas cooker. It has a bayonet fitting.is It legal for me to connect it myself or do I need a qualified gas engineer?

I bought a new cooker about 2-3 years ago I was told by the shop(major retailer)that i wasnt permited to connect the bayonet fitting (plug in and go)had to pay £30.00 for their recommended fitter he unscrewed the original fitting bent the pipe 2inches fixed it with one screw, the new cooker now wont sit flush against the wall.Bottom line is it may invalidate your home insurance if you connect it yourself, for your own peace of mind get a CORGI fitter quote and a written statement of work done or ask your insurance company if you can connect it yourself(answer =no)shop around and get a gaurantee.Good luck.
