My iron makes a lot of noise when building up steam but doesn't give a flow of steam and keeps switching off. It is not supposed to need descaling - but is it worth at try as at the moment it is completely useless.

They may say does not need descaling, but depending on your water, and if you use deionised water. With deionised water, should not need it, tap water could possibly need it, will not do any harm to try. Make sure that you read instructions for the descaler used, too strong, could cause minor damage, as it is after all an acid.
