trouble bleeding the cooling system?

you gave advice on T belt tensioner on my focus 1.8 tdci. I have another ?, i had trouble bleeding the cooling system of air after fitting a new WP. 400 miles later the engine runs fine but im not convinced that the engine is cooling properly. the rad intermittantly feels cold to the touch (hot cold hot cold). it reaches temp, engine runs fine, hot air through blower, fan cuts in. but temp gauge reacts differently to what it did before (does not overheat), do you think this is an air lock in rad that will eventualy clear itself.

on some vehicles the plastic expansion bottle hose connections have a small metal insert in connection itself and as cdc says they do block up [they usedto corrode] check at both ends of the small hoses where they fit on engine /cooling system and clean out with a small drill bit.also as mentioned previous dont forget to check hoses themselves

have had a couple of 1.8tdci`s where the small bleed hose from the thermostat housing to the reservoir is blocked preventing cooling system filling correctly, there may be two of these hoses onto the reservoir so i would remove them and just check they are clear, worth a look, good luck
