Scantronic 9800 problem - how can I get it to work?

A Scantronic 9800 was fitted to my house many years ago and the very elderly previous owner lost the codes and did not use it for many years. Not having the access codes meant that the only recourse was to do a reset to the factory settings. I have 'refreshed' the NVM chip as prescribed in the installation manual and checked that the keypad now works with the factory codes etc and also checked that all the settings are as per the factory settings, eg the entry time is set at 1 (10 seconds), the exit time is set at 1 (10 seconds) and the bells and chimes internal and external etc all work. All seemed well so proceeded to normal setting by entering the access code followed by A, sounder on keypad emitted continuous sound with 2 dashes on the screen which clears. When I go out of the exit and lock the door the exit timer stops. When I re-entered there is no sounder emitted from the keypad, the A is illuminated but nothing else. Have tried this a few times and waited for the alarm to start but nothing. Tried leaving the rear door and front door open when setting but nothing comes on the screen to warn that an area is at fault and hence the same result! Am I missing something here? I would be most grateful for any help. Many thanks. Michael

to let u understand michael, the 9800 is a pearl among swine,as the guys on here wil tell you, if its looked after ,it will serve you very well, all it asks is a new battery every 3 or 5 years,we have fitted thousands of them, and a lot still serving their masters well,so,dont give up on her, but,if she has died, sell her on e bay,the keypad will be most welcome coz you cant buy it now dont toss her in the bin ,

Did it walktest ok, and can you cause an full alarm condition at all??.

If the sensors won't fire the panel, and the programming is ok then it's highly likely the panels faulty.

Try reloading factory settings and go through the programming again, test the bells and walktest it,( nothing to loose)

Good luck mate :)

Thanks for the very good info. Have replaced battery to start with as it was over 10 years old and very flat and would not charge! Also replaced door contacts on rear door and checked circuit is good. Checked front door contacts and they also seem to be good but will check again and see if that improves matters. Just wondered if I am missing something on the zone programming? Thanks again.

Wow!, that's what I call a detailed description of events, got a major headache due to the lack of paragraphs, but hey we seldom get a fault description like this.

The guys have have done you proud !,

when you replace the control battery, and the door contact as suggested, i hope you find the time to thank the guys that took the time to help you.

Great panel :)

hi mate, your missing a lot, first things first, remove mains power, replace the 7 amp battery in the panel,i assume you have the engineering manual, now you will need to reprog the panel and tell it what you want it to do its one of the best units out,so,treat it nice
set bell cut out times, entry exit times ,zone types, etc etc good luck f you get stuck, come back here the guys will sort you out if am not online

I'd suggest that the door contacts have (technical term), stuck.

Give the contacts in the door frame a, not too sharp tap with a screwdriver handle and then try again.

If you get one or other or both to work in this way I'd then say they need to be replaced for reliability in the future.
