proview ma-982kc 19"monitor has power but blank screen?

my proview ma-982kc 19"tft monitor has power but remains on a blank screen with the occasional fuzz. I know the problem is not the lead, but could be the power connection or the monitor itself. I get a green light but nothing else. Can I fix it?

Hey Mike S your solution worked like a treat. Thanks a lot. I was about to take it away for repair but no need now. This problem has been bugging me for about a fortnight. Thanks again.

Tried sequence as suggested by Kat in a Hat and it worked. Many thanks.

hey guys i have the 2second problem aswell but!, i was just about to throw mines away when i can stumbled across away how to get it working proper again and again and again!. ive seen lots of help pages like this where everyone is talkin about replacing parts, but if u screen flicks on and then off it should work with my quick fix. heres how and i hope it works for you.

Boot up ur pc as u would usually and wait awhile untill you think everything has loaded up or has reached the logon stage.

Then if you look carefully at ur screen and press the menu button on ur monitor you should be able to see it thery faintly (i shine a lamp at it to see better).

Then i cycle through OSD (on screen disply) menu using the up or down buttons on my monitor untill i see the "AUTO" option. at this stage i press MENU button "2 times"

Then i cycle through the OSD untill i see the "RESET" option and again i press the MENU button to confirm the reset.

Then simply press the power button to switch it off and then back on....HEY PRESTO! its working again.

I have told 11 people this fix and they all reported back that it works for them 2. this method should work every time aslong as you stiil can see the green LED on ur monitor.

Mine would take ages to power up - so I replaced the 14 Capacitors as recommended above. It now powers straight up, but I have the 'stays on for two seconds ' problem. There is no image when in bright light, so perhaps its not the inverter.

Any ideas please RAY

After taking out the 2 screws at the bottom You can remove the bezel by pulling out the silver frame slightly at the bottom and sliding it upwards to release the small tags on the side an the top edges. easy..

mind you i've done the caps on 2 of these one worksok the other is still going off after a few seconds.

I have same problem, but cannot get case open. I don't want to use force. Have removed the screws, and pushed bezel (not sure of spelling). It moves away from the back of the box, but only at centre of bottom of bezel. Its almost as if there are clips holding the bezel at bottom corners that wont release. Any suggestions please.

Have inherited this monitor from my father-in-law because it had this start-up fault (monitor starts up and displays for about 2 secs then goes v dark while power LED remains on) I have taken it apart to look at the capacitors and there appears to be no bulging, no obvious burned components or shorts, no broken tracks or trapped cables.

I am now stuck and wonder whether it is a software problem in the onboard chip perhaps. Anyone had any joy with this problem - seems like I'm not the oly one with the same symptoms!!

thasts good

I also have this problem, upon opening the case on the larger of the 2 curcuit boards i have noticed 3 capacitors are bulging ( see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague ) i am jus about to order new ones from ebay and shall post my results.

Also a big thanks to everyone on here i would of just bought a new one rather than trying to fix this :)

Unfortunately, the first answer seems to be missing - either that or I am missing something! Equally, fortunately, there is enough info in the rest of the thread to carry out this repair - and in my case, it worked...

Just a couple of points:-

1) Please bear in mind you are working on a switch mode power supply, and whilst there is one large capacitor in there, and it does appear to have a drain resistor - leave the unit to discharge for at least an hour before you attempt the repair, i.e. disconnected from the mains to allow all the caps time to discharge. I didn't find any nastily charged components, but it is better to be safe than sorry...

2) Once you have removed the metal cover, you will see the power supply board with its main components facing in - there is some surface mount stuff facing out, but it is necessary to remove 4 screws to separate this pcb from the display interface. If the screw holding the earth lead (green/yellow cable coming from the mains socket) is removed, the PSU pcb can be separated without removing the whole assembly as the mains socket just slides out of its slot.

3) To Roy Gaskin:- the components you are referring to are NOT capacitors, they are small inductors, and are unlikely to have failed - after all, they are just a coil of wire, probably wound around a ferrite core.

In closing - having read this thread, I figured it would probably fix my monitor - the customer reported that the display would dim and then disappear, which didn't point to invertor failure. If you switch one of these monitors on one day and it just doesn't appear to display, this MAY point to invertor failure... They appear to be fairly sturdy (there are two of them), particularly when compared to laptop technology, but you never know - it is man-made and therefore has the potential to fail...

Thanks to all the 'pioneers' for alerting me to this fix, and I hope my ramblings may help any who follow - thanks chaps ;-)

THANKS for the advice my monitor is a proview em-190 TFT but read this thread and thought nothing to lose so I replaced 10x 220uf & 5x 100uf capacitors only cost £3 plus p&p from ebay took a while as it is a fiddly job but working fine. Would Highly reccomend you give it a try yourself

hi.
my screen powers on but no image but if i shine a light onto the screen i can see the image, would it b da backlight dat has gone? if so does any1 no where i can find backilights for a tft monitor?

shaz, April 2008
Thanks alot guys I replaced 6 x 470uf and 1x 220uf capacitors.
Working as good as new. It took under an hour to fix. On a flat surface undo the screws at the back. Then turn the monitor over so the screen faces upwards and the bottom of the monitor is towards you. Push gently from the bottom of the bezel forwards and it will slide off with ease. Lift up the LCD gently and you will see a plate screwed down. Remove this to reveal the capacitors. You will know which ones to replace as they will have bulged on top. Where as they should be flat. A pack of capacitors cost me £8.27 from Maplins. Plus £4.99 for a soldering iron and £2.76 for the solder. Job done for £16 alot better than a couple of hundred for a new monitor.

Hi Guys, I need more advice. I've been having the same problem, turn the monito on, stays on for about 2 seconds, flickers slightly then turns off leaving the green led on. Going by others experiences on this board I have replaced 6 x 470uf and 1x 220uf capacitors. Still not working so now i'm looking to change the remaining. I've identified 2x 10uf 50v and 2 x 100uf 25v but there are two remaining next to the large 470's that I cant ID. They are different from the others in that they are coated in a black rubber with no markings with the electrodes ( if that's what they're called? ) set further apart than the Electrolytic type. If anyone has replaced these can you tell me what they are so I can order? It's really driving me nuts coz im having to use the TV in the sitting room to get online!

Thank A LOT guys you saved us a heck of a lot of money buying 3 new sets.... hero's the lot you!

I had the same problem replace 6 470s and 1 220 put 35v in as maplins had no 25v in stock, total cost for repair £2.48 and at an hours work, work fine again now

I have a Proview 19 LCD monitor that had a blank screen and a flashing power led. After no help from the Proview tech support I did as previously described by replacing all of the junk capacitors on the power supply board. Caps consisted of 6 470mfd 25v, 2 10mfd 50v, and 1 220mfd 25, low ESR caps from Mouser Electronics. Total cost with shipping was $15.98. Hardest part was removing the bezel from the front of the monitor. Be patient it will come off without breaking it. Just plugged it in and it works perfectly.

Thanks a bunch!! took me a couple of hours & i only replaced the 470µ & 220µ capacitors but they were ones bulging at the top. Bought a velleman selection set of 120 electrolytic capacitors but beware there are only 5 not 6 470µ caps in a set. seen these on ebay but i went to Maplins electrical in the local high st. Cost abt £8.50 result one good as new monitor!!

Case opens from bottom like a car bonnet. Don't try to open it from top or lugs a top will break off. It's quite a fiddly job especially changing smaller caps, but the satisfaction of saving nearly £100 on a new monitor is well worth it. inside the casing screen is connected to circuit board by 5 plug in connections, a bit fiddly to put back together. The two circuit boards plug together gently part, & caps are underneath. Pretty much speaks for itself really. A decent soldering iron with a fairly fine tip is what is needed. Can't thank you enough. A lot easier than i thought it would be, a steady hand req'd for soldering though!!

1st answer was spot on!!!

I can confirm what has just been posted. The display on my monitor would disappear after about two seconds. Mine was also fairly new - less than two years. I have replaced all the caps on the PSU board (6 x 470µ 25v, 2 x 100µ 25v, 2 x 10µ 50v, 47µ 50v, 220µ 25v - I didn't bother with the big 100µ 400v). My monitor is now as good as new!

I don't know which was the faulty one, 'cos I can't test them. However, the 220µ was decidedly bulging at the top, so I suspect that. Luckily, I was able to get a 35v one that would fit, so I hope that will prevent the problem recurring.

Thank you VERY much for posting about this - you have saved me a LOT of money! A couple of quid for caps rather than £150+ for a new monitor :0)

Mark 'OIW, August 2007
just got one of these monitors myself from a friend i found the problem is the electrolitic caps are of bad quality i changed them for panasonic 105 deg change all of the caps on the psu and inverter
( the psu and inverter are on the same board ) do that and you will have a nice monitor that should last you

vlf125, July 2007
hello i had this same problem with this monitor. The problem is with one of condenser ( first behind the power supply ). All cost to change is under 10 pounds if you change alone;).

Michal warrior_24@wp.pl, May 2007
Hi,

I have the same problem, I've also notice that looking at the screen closely I can see a very faint image which might suggest that the backlight in the monitor has gone.

Alexander, April 2007
Hi,

I have the same problem... it will power up for about a second then go off. the power light stays green. If I switch it off and on again the same thing happens. I have had no buzzing from it and it doesnt stay on long enough to get warm. Have any one found anything out on this yet?

Cheers

Andy, January 2007
I have a similar problem. When the monitor has been switched off for several hours and is then switched back on, it works for about 20 minutes. I then hear a buzzing noise and the image disappears. the green light remains on. If I then switch off briefly and then switch the monitor back on, I see the image for about 3-4 seconds and then it disappears again but this time without the buzzing. Damn annoying especially as the monitor is just out of warranty. The monitor has been looked at by an independent engineer who re-soldered some connections but nothing has changed. Martin
